Challenges, barriers and expectations related to the development of Artificial Intelligence in Poland and Sweden – these are the topics of the webinar organized by the Polish Embassy in Stockholm on November 9. The GAIA Foundation was represented by Damian Ciachorowski.
The panelists wondered how to increase European investment in AI, which currently amounts to EUR 1.5 billion. According to experts, the real needs require several times more financing to catch up with world leaders – China and the United States. This can be achieved through pro-development state regulations and the creation of an investor-friendly environment. The specialists also emphasized that the cooperation of scientists and business is essential for the market future of solutions using artificial intelligence.
The debate revolved around four topics:
1. Where are the greatest challenges and threats, including barriers in artificial intelligence?
2. How do you see the future of artificial intelligence (with or without an EU regulation)?
3. How can we foster infrastructure sharing and data sharing?
4. How can Poland and Sweden cooperate in the field of artificial intelligence?
According to GAIA, the greatest challenge related to AI today is to put people at the center of technological processes. During the webinar, Damian Ciachorowski emphasized that modern technological corporations are not always guided by such a humanistic approach – Security, freedom and privacy of an individual are of secondary importance to them – emphasized the President of GAIA. According to him, the next great risk comes with inappropriate and unstable technological development that leads to inequality. It also entails the digital exclusion of many people from societies. There are many technological challenges and threats in the region related to Poland and Sweden – the Baltic countries are struggling with a brain drain, i.e. the escape of talented young people to other countries in Europe and the world. Pollution and climate change are also problems. The Baltic Sea itself is one of the most polluted seas. Those are real problems that AI can help us to solve. – he said. He also outlined how he sees the future of artificial intelligence on a global scale. According to him, the three major global centers will, according to different models, develop markets and technologies related to AI – the USA will focus on the business and utilitarian side of Artificial Intelligence. Americans will, in their own way, view advanced technology as wealth to be exploited. This will involve different and often competing ethical models. In turn, China will focus on relying on AI in its geopolitical rivalry. In Europe, it will be for us to work on consistent ethical rules for artificial intelligence drivers. We will not be the fastest and the best, but our artificial intelligence will be the most trustworthy. – GAIA President summed up.
What was the conclusion of the webinar? The panelists agreed that Poland and Sweden could perfectly complement each other and exchange their experiences and talents. The development of joint research teams should be a priority for specialists in many fields from both countries. For GAIA, the cooperation with Sweden will largely focus on creating a better model of cooperation between people and machines and the work of our Think Tank.
