Spearheaded by the Government of France, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Coalition brings together stakeholders across the AI value chain to foster dialogue and launch ambitious collaborative initiatives that harness AI in support of global environmental goals.
Advancing Beneficial AI has been the guiding mission of the Global Artificial Intelligence Alliance for the past five years. This impact-driven organization has now committed to collective action within the Coalition for Sustainable AI, working toward solutions that benefit both people and the planet while enhancing competitiveness. GAIA’s work is grounded in the OECD.AI Principles and the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
The Coalition was officially announced during the leaders’ session of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris by Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General. For the first time, environmental sustainability and AI were brought together as central themes in a global high-level discussion.
At the Forum for Sustainable AI – held as part of the AI Action Summit at the French Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion – Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher introduced a full day of discussions on the environmental implications of AI. This marked the launch of new international collaborations between public, private, and research actors. The Coalition aims to embed sustainable AI as a permanent topic in global AI governance, alongside AI safety and ethics.
As a member of the GAIA ThinkTank and its Programming Board, I deeply value these developments. This Coalition aligns with GAIA’s Manifesto and builds upon our past contributions – from Kyoto’s Internet Governance Forum and Geneva’s ITU AI for Good, to the Global Conference on AGI in Panama, and our own ongoing initiative, CompassionAI.
During the Forum, I also had the opportunity to announce that GAIA is finalizing a new report focused on research into the Sustainable Digital Transition. The report, co-authored with Damian Ciachorowski, GAIA’s President of the Board, draws on international research efforts and will contribute directly to our participation in the Coalition.
